Transitioning from the JV team to the varsity team requires a higher level of mastery over the sport which includes a player’s ability to adapt to the tougher competition. This is one of the many challenges faced by the JV girls’ tennis team during their transition to the varsity team.
JV players must know the fundamentals of tennis, such as improving their strokes. According to Head Coach Bill Yee, the girls have been dedicated to improving their games and are always trying their best. Yee also adds that ,although many of them are beginners, the players have made great progress, but they still need to work on hitting with more pace, serving, forehand and backhand, as well as being consistent with the shots.
“Varsity is for people who love the sport and want the full experience of it.,” Co-Captain Tracy Trinh said.
Other than experience, one of the biggest keys to being on varsity is dedication and commitment. The players could not have gotten experience if they had given up. Teamwork is also crucial because they encourage each other to do better, and wanting to do better than others motivates the girls to improve.
“Skills and experience is how they get into varsity, but dedication and commitment is how they get to stay in varsity,” Trinh said.
After the season ends, it is important for the players to continue playing tennis on a regular basis with their peers in order to further refine their skills. Nevertheless, it is still important for the team to always have fun during practices and games, while making progress in learning the fundamentals of the game along the way.
